many many thanks to karina (and ted) for giving me the ears up on this album. to make things better, it is being released in the u.s. after its u.k. release back in oh-three. flotation toy warning has finally made me stop listening to the new animal collective and nada surf records. delicious dreamy pop with glorious vibrato vocals from a london multi-instumental and sample-happy quintet. take one part flaming lips. add one part radiohead. generous dash of beatles. a lovin’ spoonful of grandaddy. a big fat lump of funky beats. two parts marijuana. a dribble of acid. and gobs of heroin. shake well, sit down, and enjoy bluffers guide to the flight deck on a warm afternoon.

mp3 of ‘go your own way’ sung by colin meloy and ben gibbard during the encore of stars/decemberists/death cab last week. best show ive seen the stars play. they had a saxaphonist. decemberists were also better than last time i saw them. and death cab for cutie were ok. cant say they were better than when i saw them the day after elliott smith died. benny was pretty upset about it and got really into all their sad mopey songs. i ddidnt take pictures but luckily stereogum snaped this one.

very disturbing speech supposedly by Mr. Chi Haotian, Minster of Defense and vice-chairman of China’s Central Military Commission that outlines a possible CCP plan for using biological weapons to kill 100-200 million americans to prepare for chinese colonialization/expansion, likening the strategy to that of the Nazis, Japanese, and of course, americans. highlights below
When we decide to revitalize China based on the German model, we must not repeat the mistakes they made.
Specifically, the following are the fundamental causes for their defeat: First, they had too many enemies all at once, as they did not adhere to the principle of eliminating enemies one at a time; second, they were too impetuous, lacking the patience and perseverance required for great accomplishments; third, when the time came for them to be ruthless, they turned out to be too soft, therefore leaving troubles that resurfaced later on.
…
Publicly we still emphasize economic development as our center, but in reality, economic development has war as its center! We have made a tremendous effort to construct “The Great Wall Project” to build up, along our coastal and land frontiers as well as around large and medium-sized cities, a solid underground “Great Wall” that can withstand a nuclear war. We are also storing all necessary war materials. Therefore, we will not hesitate to fight a Third World War, so as to lead the people to go out and to ensure the Party’s leadership position. In any event, we, the CCP, will never step down from the stage of history! We’d rather have the whole world, or even the entire globe, share life and death with us than step down from the stage of history!!! Isn’t there a ‘nuclear bondage’ theory? It means that since nuclear weapons have bound the security of the entire world, all will die together if death is inevitable. In my view, there is another kind of bondage, and that is, the fate our Party is tied up with that of the whole world. If we, the CCP, are finished, China will be finished, and the world will be finished.
…
Only countries like the United States, Canada and Australia have the vast land to serve our need for mass colonization.
Therefore, solving the “issue of America” is the key to solving all other issues. First, this makes it possible for us to have many people migrate there and even establish another China under the same leadership of the CCP. America was originally discovered by the ancestors of the yellow race, but Columbus gave credit to the white race. We the descendents of the Chinese nation are entitled to the possession of the land! It is said that the residents of the yellow race have a very low social status in United States. We need to liberate them. Second, after solving the “issue of America,” the western countries in Europe would bow to us, not to mention to Taiwan, Japan and other small countries. Therefore, solving the “issue of America” is the mission assigned to CCP members by history.
…
The United States is the most successful country in the world today. Only after we have learned all of its useful experiences can we replace it in the future. Even though we are presently imitating the American tone “China and United States rely on each other and share honor and disgrace,” we must not forget that the history of our civilization repeatedly has taught us that one mountain does not allow two tigers to live together.
We also must never forget what Comrade Xiaoping emphasized “refrain from revealing the ambitions and put others off the track.” The hidden message is: we must put up with America; we must conceal our ultimate goals, hide our capabilities and await the opportunity. In this way, our mind is clear. Why have we not updated our national anthem with something peaceful? Why did we not change the anthem’s theme of war?
…
Only by using special means to “clean up” America will we be able to lead the Chinese people there. This is the only choice left for us. This is not a matter of whether we are willing to do it or not. What kind of special means is there available for us to “clean up” America? Conventional weapons such as fighters, canons, missiles and battleships won’t do; neither will highly destructive weapons such as nuclear weapons. We are not as foolish as to want to perish together with America by using nuclear weapons, despite the fact that we have been exclaiming that we will have the Taiwan issue resolved at whatever cost. Only by using non-destructive weapons that can kill many people will we be able to reserve America for ourselves. There has been rapid development of modern biological technology, and new bio weapons have been invented one after another. Of course we have not been idle; in the past years we have seized the opportunity to master weapons of this kind. We are capable of achieving our purpose of “cleaning up” America all of a sudden. When Comrade Xiaoping was still with us, the Party Central Committee had the perspicacity to make the right decision not to develop aircraft carrier groups and focus instead on developing lethal weapons that can eliminate mass populations of the enemy country.
…
We must prepare ourselves for two scenarios. If our biological weapons succeed in the surprise attack [on the United States], the Chinese people will be able to keep their losses at a minimum in the fight against the United States. If, however, the attack fails and triggers a nuclear retaliation from the United States, China would perhaps suffer a catastrophe in which more than half of its population would perish. That is why we need to be ready with air defense systems for our big and medium-sized cities. Whatever the case may be, we can only move forward fearlessly for the sake of our Party and state and our nation’s future, regardless of the hardships we have to face and the sacrifices we have to make. The population, even if more than half dies, can be reproduced. But if the Party falls, everything is gone, and forever gone!
…
Here some people may want to ask me: what about the several millions of our compatriots in the United States? They may ask: aren’t we against Chinese killing other Chinese?
These comrades are too pedantic; they are not pragmatic enough. If we had insisted on the principle that the Chinese should not kill other Chinese, would we have liberated China? As for the several million Chinese living in the United States, this is of course a big issue. Therefore in recent years, we have been conducting research on genetic weapons, i.e. those weapons that do not kill yellow people. But producing a result with this kind of research is extremely difficult. Of the research done on genetic weapons throughout the world, the Israeli’s is the most advanced. Their genetic weapons are designed to target Arabs and protect the Israelis. But even they have not reached the stage of actual deployment. We have cooperated with Israel on some research. Perhaps we can introduce some of the technologies used to protect Israelis and remold these technologies to protect the yellow people.

Marxism pointed out that violence is the midwife for the birth of the new society. Therefore war is the midwife for the birth of China’s century. As war approaches, I am full of hope for our next generation.

We reckon that Fucking has been around a lot longer than 800 years, otherwise there wouldn’t have been any Fucks to lend their name to the village in the first place, would there?

south korean man dies due to fifty hour video game binge
ok. not enough interesting stuff for a post today so instead we will talk about music that i’ve been into recently. and NOT into recently
john vanderslice - pixel revolt
phenomenal. gorgeously brilliant. his best album yet. more political commentary than cellar door. notably ‘exodus damage’ with the chorus “dance dance revolution. all we’re gonna get. unless it falls apart. so i say go go go go down. let it fall down i’m ready for the end” and ‘radiant with terror’.. ‘dead slate pacific’ is probably the most beautifully depressing song you’ll hear this year “i went off the pills. bought my ticket. i used to think there was nothing between us. just 6000 miles the dead slate pacific. and on that united flight in a white hot panic i sank to the bottom of the sea. countless horrible creatures. complicated undersea secrets. if i didnt go diving there with a speargun, knife, and flare. how would i ever make it through. thats when i really knew the only thing standing between me and that rope hung on a carpenter’s beam was you”. and ‘trance manual’ (love song set in iraq) will cheer you up with its clinky bells and “come to me now. you are warming weather. come to me now. the kind that comes with sandbags along the river”. ‘continuation’ is a lovely creepy serial killer/detective tale. ‘peacocks in the video rain’ is a great love song “you can tell a cable from a tournicate(sp?) when ten thousand twelve year olds mouth along. tiny broken operatic sounds dissolve the loss that could not be found”. writting assistance from john darnielle, contributions from tons of great musicians, and great production thanks to john and scott solter. what a guy. this john. read the fabulous interview at sixeyes.blogspot.com. ‘trance manual’ is linked below in summer mix 2.
nada surf - the weight is a gift
i think i like it more than let go. it fucking rocks and is catchy yet serious. an addicting, honest album. makes me think of the wrens. ‘concrete bed’ is a perfect opener - “you dont realize you’re fried. you’re so fried. to find someone to love you gotta to be someone you love. stay high if you have to. do whatever it asks you. you got another calling. dont let it pass you”. ‘your legs grow’ doesnt rock balls like many songs. but its so beautiful. maybe my favorite. “theres a lot that rises up. from the bottom of the lake. and its beam has hit me hard. now i’m wide awake. where its cold but not that deep. cause you legs grow-ow-ow-ow” . ‘blankest year’ is about exactly that with the chorus “i had the blankest year. i saw life turn into a tv show. it was totally weird. the person i knew i didnt really know… ahhh fuck it (fuck it) i’m gonna have a party” i could go on and on.. and dammit now i have to listen to it.. ‘do it again’ is linked below in summer mix 2.
sigur ros - takk
just got this a few days ago.. much better than (). they actually rock out sometimes. very pretty most of the time but not all orchestral and shit like aegeus byroenbhjirb. however thats spelled. i need some more pot before i can really give it a serious review.
american analog set - set free
more hushed and droney than know by heart or promise of love. if thats possible. more reverb and slightly phased vocals in the production give it a more druggy, atmospheric quality than their usual clean vibes. they even use some new guitar sounds. was that distortion?? ‘born on the cusp’ is the whispered opener about whats “bigger than us. its bigger than love”. ‘play hurt’ updates(perfects?) the catchy, hopeless entrancement of older amanset gems, saying “you know what its like to be me when your eyes light up. and you know what youre doing. you can only play hurt so much. when youre calling me all about him and i cant hang up”
silver jews - tanglewood numbers
berman throws more diverse instrumentation into his ‘pavement playing country songs’ sound. first record since he cleaned up and stopped smoking crack. seriously. crack. among other substances… mrs. berman is featured more prominantly and i’m still on the fence as to whether its better than american water. but its a great listen nonetheless. “wheres the paper bag that holds the liquor. in case i feel the need to puke” is the first line of the album. ’sometimes a pony gets depressed’ is playful song examining the realities of animal life and “what kind of animal needs to smoke a cigarette”… “happiness wont leave me alone says the bird in his nest. get a load of this fucking view its the best in the west”. brilliant. ‘k-hole’ tackles the desperation of ketamine abuse. ‘i’m getting back into getting back into you’ confesses “ive been working at the airport bars like christmas in a submarine. wings and brandy on a winters night. i guess you wouldnt call it a scene” and charges “you can call it a spin off. say its a knock off. title it part two. but i’m getting back into getting back into getting back into you”. i really love ’sleeping is the only love’ and not just because i love sleep.
ryan adams - september songs
ive only managed to get a live performance of the album, so i cant comment on the final product which he boasts has “patsy cline-type arrangements” and will have norah jones on one track. the songs are mad good, a few great. i’ve been digging ‘a kiss before i go’ with its jangly shuffle and the earnest singing in ‘learn to love’ that ranges from whisper to powerful to rough to falsetto.. “i’m too old to let you go and too young to let you down”. i hope it turns out as well as cold roses.
i am kloot - i am kloot
psych tinged brit-pop done well. not as hokey and cliche as most outfits that attempt this genre. they have a bluesy edge that completes their refreshing sound. at last a brit-pop singer that doesnt try to sound exactly like the bloke from coldplay. i’m not saying its perfect. but its a damn promising debut. ‘untitled #1′ gets me everytime. ‘life in a day’ will make your head nod or toe tap or dance or whatever physical reaction you have to a funky rock song.
left banke/ montage
these bands are from a short-lived subgenre of the late sixties that contemporary critics dubbed ‘baroque-n-roll’ and not so creative critics called ‘baroque rock’ ..piano and harpsichord based songs fleshed out with strings, oboes, etc with a lighthearted swagger. rarely uses guitar. michael brown wrote the songs for both bands and stopped touring after their first successes to become a studio recluse. strangely, their biggest hit ‘walk away renee’ was cowritten by renee, the bassists girlfriend, whom michael was in love with. ‘pretty ballerina’ and ’she may call you up tonight’ are also fruits of this torrid band affair and some of their best tunes. 16 year old stephen tyler sang backup vocals on a few left banke tracks.
sufjan stevens - illinois
first off, i am NOT into this album. i havent been able to listen to more than a couple songs before getting too annoyed. the girl sing along chorus that backs him on almost every song grates my soul. it just seems like he spent a little more time on the songs from michigan and substitued illinois for everytime he sang michigan. and chicago for detroit. and chicago for flint. whatever. its like each song corresponds to a song on the other album. the token happy song with an explanation point in the title….. and at the beginning of the first instrumental breakdown in ‘come on! feel the illinoise’ (around 2:38) the horns and flute are playing the synthesizer horn and flute parts from the cure’s ‘close to me’ its such a blatant rip off. ooh then he changes keys and keeps ripping it off. ugh. several other parts on the album sound mad familiar but i havent been able to put my finger on the source (the vocal verses in ‘jacksonville’ seem to borrow heavily from a beta band song i cant think of).. yet. i was really hopeful for this album. ‘flint for the underpaid..’ is one of the saddest greatest songs. anyway in all fairness i havent made it through the whole thing yet. so there may be some redeeming parts. i still cant understand how he sold out three nights at the bowery ballroom when olivia tremor control didnt sell out on either night at the same place. people are so fucking stupid its unbelievable.
ps i’m lazy and will put olivia tremor control pics up soon. promise.
