There are two great posts at Plasticbag.org about the ways we will recieve media in the future. One is about tagging - specifically the new tagging feature added to Amazon.com. Tom Coates says that once you have a something that you want to display or sell, you then need to start getting all the metadata you can find and “glomming it onto the first order objects.” He talks about the ways last.fm accomplishes a wealth of meta data information. He also writes about the ways in which podcasting will seriously challenge broadcast in the future. It’s an interesting read.

Photography thats always in focus? This Stanford grad student designed a digital camera that simultaneously takes photos at 4 different focus levels. The focus can be adjusted after the photo has been taken. Maybe in the future we’ll be able to adjust focus (or put everything in to sharp focus) after a picture is taken.

I’ve always wanted to take the paper-based playlist system that we use at WBOR, and make it digital. This would allow the music directors to more easily to do charts and adds, and also would allow the current track information to be displayed on the WBOR webpage. So this weekend I mocked up what this web application might look like. Heres a link to the mockup:
Web Playlist mockup
Let me know what you think. I think the mockup is pretty self-explanatory. I talked to Mark, a Bowdoin student and PHP programmer, who may be able to help us put it together. I’ve also thought about making it with Ruby On Rails, which as far as I can tell, is an elegant, intuitive language.

This report from Tiny Mix Tapes makes me furious:
http://tinymixtapes.com/2005_11_01_archivenews.htm#113152691415817238
“Brian Wilson is picking up litigious vibrations, and they’re coming from his cousin! The music legend, who released the long awaited SMiLE album last year to wide spread critical acclaim [TMT Review], is being sued by his first cousin and former Beach Boys bandmate Mike Love. The lawsuit has been primarily provoked by an advertisement in Britain’s The Daily Mail, which gave away 2.6 million copies of a Beach Boys compilation.
“Wilson shamelessly misappropriated Mike Love’s songs, likeness and the Beach Boys trademark, as well as the ‘Smile’ album itself, ” claim Love’s lawyers. Love is looking to be compensated for millions of dollars in profits stemming from the give away, which he says undermined sales the band would have otherwise made from the album. He is also seeking another million dollars to be used for international advertising. In addittion to Wilson, the suit names The Mail on Sunday, Associated Newspapers LTD., Bigtime.TV, Sanctuary Records Group, and others. “The people around Brian have used him for their own financial gain without regard to his rights, my rights, or the rights of the estates of his deceased brothers, Carl and Dennis, and their children, ” a statement by Love said.
Love is currently the sole owner of the right to tour under the Beach Boys name which, depending on how you look at it, could mean he’s shamelessly misappropriating much of Brian Wilson’s work. What’s worse, being sued by your cousin or being sued by a dead guy? Love and mercy to you and your friends tonight!”
Fucking rediculous.
Mike Love is suing cousin Brian Wilson over SMiLE — which he was instrumental in preventing its release in 1967 and fucking up Brian’s mental health as well. He complained that he didn’t understand lyrics like ‘columnated ruins domino’
Dr. Eugene Landy, Brian’s longtime confidant, believes that Love should not have been allowed to use the Beach Boys name unless Brian would agree to write and/or produce 80% of the material due to contractual obligations with former labels. Love continues recording and touring as the Beach Boys to this day despite the deaths of Wilson brothers Carl and Dennis, with 1988’s ‘Kokomo’ being the only ‘hit’ since Brian’s departure.
Mike and Brian have a history of problems despite sharing writing credits on classics like ‘Surfin’ Safari,’ ‘Fun, Fun, Fun,’ ‘Do it again,’ ‘The Warmth of the Sun,’ and fucking ‘Good Vibrations’
Love, however, was usually supportive of Brian’s songwriting, as he had authored nearly all of their hit originals with many contemporary articles saying “Brian is the genius of the group” and “Brian is the group” which was naturally resented by lead singer Mike Love. “It’s a bitch of a persona conflict trip going” said Brian. Carl and Mike were pissed, but other brother Dennis consistantly supported Brian’s artistic and legal efforts before his drowning in 1983.
This isnt the first time the two have opposed each other in court.. in 1990, Brian’s mother Audree, brother Carl, and cousin Stan Love (Mike’s brother) brought suit to ask a judge to declare him incompetent and appoint a conservator to handle his affairs.. all while Brian is in a major court case with Irving Almo Music, publisher of A&M records, to regain songwriting copywrites to a number of hit songs (a multi-million dollar catalogue his father Murray sold in 1969 for $700,000). Murray is also responsible for Brian’s deafness in one ear resulting from constant abuse throughout his childhood.
The two cousins also cowrote ‘California Girls,’ but Murry Wilson, Brian’s dad and Beach Boys publisher, listed Brian as the sole author..
“so in other words we have our problems but it’s ok, they’re worked out. I worked it out with him” said Brian in an august 1988 interview for Bay Area Music magazine.
well. not quite.
Bill Holdship spoke with Brian in 1991 about the band’s dynamics since Brian stopped touring with the group in the late sixties…
“Earlier in May of 1990, shortly after the conservatorship suit was filed Brian flew up to San Francisco for a couple of gigs two nights in a row. He walked backstage to the dressing room and not having seen these guys for months, Mike’s response wasn’t ‘hello’, but rather to walk up to Brian and stand as close as possible, intimidating Brian, and playing up to Brian’s fear of Mike. And then the first words out of his mouth were: ‘Those shoes look hideous’. When Al Jardine walked up and said to Brian ‘What are you doing here?’ Brian said ‘I work here. These are my songs.’ Al was quiet for a moment and then said ‘Well just don’t sing them like you’re a Vegas lounge act.’ And Carl didn’t say a word to Brian that whole night. … Equally unbelievable was that during the second show Al Jardine left in the middle of the concert. He just walked off the stage because he had a plane to catch.”
In a 1994 interview by Melodye Dorst with Mike Love, he bitched about not getting writing credits for ‘California Girls’ and ‘I Get Around’, saying:
“Brian has gotten, deservedly, a lot of credit, but I haven’t been given the credit I deserve. Professionally speaking, that’s the most personally impactful thing I can think of when your own cousin and your own uncle cheat you, it’s a real drag. Brian has his excuses, I guess you say, or excuses could be made, or it could be rationalised because he’s had a series of mental problems, nervous breakdowns, and he’s diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic … But, most of his adult life he’s been under the control of other people which is sad.”
Love, during the SMiLE sessions, was adament in continuing their tried-and-true pop formula of their old songs (which they discovered were still very popular, especially in the UK.. and returned to for songs such as ‘Do it Again’) rather than the experimental musings of Brian and Van Dyke Parks, who contributed all of the lyrics and significant musical aspects of SMiLE.
Holdship also spoke with Van Dyke Parks on the SMiLE subject, of which he said in reference to Mike Love’s criticism:
“I do think it’s unfair that the words should have been analysed so dismissively as they were. I think that that was wrong to do because, in fact, what I was trying to do was pursue Brian’s vision. And all I know was that I never changed a syllable of his in his melodies. That’s soverign. Melody is what comes from God. Melodies are feelings; words are thoughts.
…
It’s understandable to me that Mike Love didn’t like them. They were more sophisticated than he was capable of doing himself, and I can see — now that I look back on it — how he might have had some animosity toward me because, in fact, I took his job — the job that he wanted so desperately.”
Thirty years after the aborted SMiLE sessions, Love asked Parks,
“What do those words mean? ‘Over and over the crow flies, uncover the cornfield.’ And I was able to tell him, again, ‘I don’t know!’ I have no idea what those words mean. But I don’t think it’s an ugly picture. I think it’s a pretty picture.”
Ironically, in Love’s Dorst interview, he says Pet Sounds is his favorite album (Brian began recording SMiLE before Pet Sounds was finished) “because of the orchestrations and arrangements. Because it’s not just about cars or girls or school, but it’s about feelings; however, I think there was a screw up on that which was that they didn’t include ‘Good Vibrations’ on that album because it was being worked on about the same time. Had that been included, it really would be my favorite.”
Sure, Mike. Sure.. Unfortunatly it was never included on an album until 2004 (though many songs that appear on SMiLE were released in other forms on various releases and box sets), when Brian unveiled a completed SMiLE with its intended climax…. Good Vibrations.
Dorst asked Love, “What is the biggest motivation for giving up your summer every year and going out on the road?
Money! Because then we don’t have to go very far the rest of the year because we make enough money during the summer to relax and do some other things during the winter. That’s basically it.”
Aside from money, Love seems to be spitting up words that would be appropriate coming from Brian.
Domenic Priore quotes Van Dyke Parks in his article “When Two Great Saints Meet…”:
“Brian Wilson wanted to transform his message from fast cars and the illicit underbelly of eroticism, and extend his focus to something of a different nature, representing his greater understanding. I say the effort we all made in the ’60s was necessary at the time. The foolishness was incidental. We got something done: we got out of Vietnam, we redefined what a song can do. There’s blood, sweat and tears, there are hard lessons learned, and I feel totally at peace with the product of our participation. The only rub for me was that Brian and I did not put out a record together, to completion. We did not bring a record to press.”
I’ll conclude with another Parks quote from Holdship:
“I knew when I met Brian Wilson that I was the only person that could encourage him to be himself. I think Brian then was pushed to an act of great courage — to develop the definition of what a song could do — and I think he pursued it. And, risking all, I think he was overwhelmed by the self-interests of the other fellows in the group, who were.. uh, almost irrelevant to this vision he had of the American Deam. I think I was part and parcel of what it was. And I was abetting him in that effort. So, I think they shot the messenger, but at least they didn’t lose the message.”
oh yeah. and fuck mike love. brian deserves better, especially from family
